Mountain Biking Costs

If you had to sit down and take the time as to the actual cost of mountain biking, I seriously think that the sport would not be growing as fast as it is in South Africa. You initial cost of establishing yourself in the sport with bike, kit, shoes helmets etc is a tidy sum. However, when you really get into the sport and start doing the hours it really does star to add up. From the supplements, race entries - it all starts to add up.

The reason for my rant on this topic is that I have already spent about R5000 on servicing of my bike already this year - that is simply just to keep it going - no upgrades or anything just simple part replacements and servicing costs. And it looks like I will be spending at least 3/4 of that now with my next visit to the LBS.

I will give a breakdown of the costs when I get the bike back - but this is really beginning to add up - I am a little bleak right now - what with not having a bike for a week - and having to fit the big bill afterwards! Leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth...

  1. Hi Roons, I know how you feel. I had a new drive train not so long ago and boy was it expensive! Had I realised at the outset that this is a rich man's game i probably wouldn't have bothered. However...

Anyway, how about a money saving tip..Following my drive train replacement, my Epic Partner suggested running two chains on the bike, alternating them each week (or two if not riding much). It's too early to report fully, but so far so good, and my partner reckons it saved him a lot of money prior to his Epic last year.

    Cheers

  2. Seriously that is a shedload of money. First step: learn to do it yourself, most bike maintenance is not rocket science. My previous bike I did 2000km and never cost me a cent in services or parts really...maybe you're just heavy on stuff.

As for the two chain thing I am trying it too hopefully will work. Also means if you do wreck one in the epic you have a spare that will work with your cassette.

  3. My last bike NEVER got serviced! And I rode it for 6 years... just normal maintenance - now I have a 'fancy' bike and the thing bleeds me!

Have just got word that my bike is only going to be back next Friday. :-( Which has made me VERY grumpy.
My guess is that this trip to the shop will leave me out of pocket of R4k.

Maybe I will take up swimming next - a speedo is only R80!!!
