The Challenge of Winter

Well I am not for a minute going to suggest that the winters here in South Africa are anything to rival the lads up north. But needless to say - getting out on the bike in winter does take a considerable amount of effort. Over the last couple of weeks I have stocked up on a supply of winter goodies - from tights to gloves and every possible conceivable gadget to assist in the preventing of frostbite in the mornings.

So now I really have no excuse not to get out on the bike... or do I. Well now that the cold has been taken care of with my winter wardrobe - the question of "Why?" keeps me snugly ensconced in duvet! The truth is - I really did not have any reason to get up and out on the bike. No upcoming races, no major events - nothing was on the horizion that could instill the fear of getting out on the bike. So I have hit the 2009 MTB calender and committed
to some upcoming races. The first major race of the post winter slump will be the Spring Classic in early September. And although this is some time away - it will give me enough time to put together a proper training schedule and hopefully be well and ready in time for it. In the meantime I have also committed to some other races that will hopefully keep my interest peaked during the cold months. Anyone suggest any 'not-to-be-missed' races before then?

I really do think that riding without purpose is incredibly difficult and in certain parts of the world just damn right silly!
