Back in the Saddle Again...

Ok, so it was not really my up to my usual time in the saddle - but it was a start. I finally managed to roll out of bed at 06h30 this morning and by 06h45 I was trundling down the road in first light. The temperature was a poultry 6 degrees - but I was feeling awesome. It was great to be out on the bike again and I felt a tad guilty that it has taken me so long to get back into the swing of things. My environmental conscience was also awakened - I cannot understand in a city with as bad traffic as we have in Johannesburg that more people do not ride to work in the morning. I am sure we can all find excuses of why we cannot ride to work but I suspect that the argurments of why we should all ride to work are stronger.

I simply drive into work with a car full of clothes, towels and the necessary stuff to get me looking respectable for the week. Leave the car at the office for the day to get to meetings etc. And simply ride to work and back during the week. Then take it all home on the Friday! I know I am fortunate to have showers at work - but ask around your will be surprised who has a shower to share nearby ;)

Anyway, I am putting together my schedule for the week - it is far off the 15-18hrs per week - but right now some regular rides are more important. This morning was only an hour - but had such a blast!

So stop making excuses - get out on your bike. Things will get safer the more of us who ride on our bikes in the morning. We need to build up the critical mass for it to become an acceptable norm on the roads in South Africa.

  1. I have been commuting by bike in London and love it. I think you are very brave cycling through Jo'burg (or is it Jozi now?) but I certainly agree that we should all get on our bikes and make a statement for the future.
