Tapering...

Well if you read all the reports of Epic training you will see that the forums are alive with news on tapering. In essence tapering is a cutting down of intensity and/or hours. The theory behind tapering is that your recovery will increase faster than you fitness will decrease. With the base training out of the way - the intensity sessions that I had been doing over the last few weeks had certainly taken their toll as my legs were feeling stiff after my training sessions. So I am looking forward to the tapering weeks ahead! This week my schedule suggests that I cut down to 9 hours this week - which I think will be optimistic. I am planning on doing 2 X 3hr schedules during the week resting on the Thursday and Friday and doing an easy ride on Saturday. This week is all about getting rest on the days that I do not train. I am also making a concerted effort get as much sleep as possible, taking all my vitamins and minerals - in essence making sure I am strong as possible going into the Epic.

Although there is not an exact science to tapering - I am going to try as much as possible to stick to it. The hours have been done now, the intensity sessions have been achieved - so now it is important to get the rest before heading down to Cape Town.

The intensity of logistics however is picking up! Hell, there is a lot to organise for this race! :)

That sums it up perfectly! The closer the Epic gets the more I realise that the physical preparation is almost as daunting as the training schedule was all those months ago.
